I have been asked by a collector to paint a pair of watercolours that depict salt marshes in subtle tones of grey/blue, and rust/taupe.
Salt marshes have not been a subject that have ever previously attracted me to be honest. Since taking on this commission however and searching through hundreds of salt marsh imagery I have come to appreciate their minimal beauty.

Now on the go are two small watercolour studies. These are helping me test out colours and ways to proceed before I go big and paint the size required of 16 inches square.

The tests are 8×8 inches and if I am happy with them may keep them for myself.
Below are the 8×8’s at their current early stages.
As you can see - one has a high horizon line and one a low horizon as requested by the collector.
Feeling my way slowly with this I have been applying subtle washes and letting the whole painting dry before adding another. So far I am happy but the test will come when I start adding the stronger tones….
